Back in August, the Husband and I went on a TOP SECRET mission to our nation's capital, Washington D.C. Okay, okay... it was not top secret, but we did go on a last-minute road trip for work.
*I have been going back and forth about writing the long version or the short version of this story. I think since I am making a mini album and adding it to Project Life, I will write out the long version and break it down into 5 posts.
In July, my bosses asked me to book a truck to move their daughter's car from Washington, D.C. to Colorado Springs. The absolute last day the car transport company could pick up the car in order to get it to Colorado on time was August 6, 2013. After doing a little research, I found a company that would've been able to work with me within this time frame. I got the OK from the bosses to book the truck and after I got all the confirmation numbers, etc. from the transport company, I assumed that we were all set to go. Four days before the move I called the transport company to check-in and see what the status was and they told me that they did not have a truck yet, but would work on it and get back to me.
I called every day to check the status and every day I got the same run around about how they were still looking for a truck and that they would call me back. And after all the misdirection and excuses, they never called me back and they never found a truck! So after many phone calls and many hours of trying to work this out with the company (and the manager giving his word), I asked for our deposit back. Time was of the essence and we now had to work on plan B, which we didn't really have planned because we never expected the car transport company to flake so badly.
On Tuesday, Aug. 6, 2013, the absolute last day the car could be in Washington, D.C., it was still there and we had no plan for getting it moved. I had doctor's appointments all that morning and at the same time I was on my phone trying to find a last-minute transport company with no luck. When we were on our way back to the office, I called my boss so that we could figure out what to do next. At one point, I mentioned to the boss that the Husband half-jokingly said that he would fly out to D.C. and drive the car to Colorado for them if we couldn't find any other way.
An hour later we got a call asking if he was serious about driving and I said he would love to and that he just needed to get his shift covered at work. The Husband got on the phone with his boss and told him what was going on and he got his shift covered with no problems.
It didn't take much convincing for the bosses to allow me to accompany the Husband on this little last-minute adventure, so the next step in our "secret mission" was to book flights and a hotel in D.C. After all that was done, we felt a bit rushed because we were leaving first thing the next morning and we still had dinner plans that night and it was too late to cancel. By the time we got home at 10 p.m., we still had to do laundry and pack. It was a little stressful, but we were so excited to be taking a last-minute road trip together.
(Check out the creepy kid that photo bombed us...)
The next morning, I told the Husband that we needed to leave the house at 5 a.m. because of the morning (stock broker) traffic and for the extra time it would take for long-term parking. He thought that leaving at 5:30 a.m. would give us plenty of time and not to worry about it, but sure enough, we were running out of time. By the time we got to our gate, they had begun boarding. [Editor's Note: We were EXACTLY on time!]
We had to run (walk really fast) through the airport to get to our gate and after all that rushing around, I was really thirsty so the Husband had to go get me a bottle of water.
*Sidebar about the Husband: He is on his own time no matter what. You can't rush him because he will move even slower. He always takes his time doing things and sometimes it stresses me out because I rush when I feel like I need to rush.
Okay, so we were boarding the plane and the Husband was still off getting me water (so sweet) and I was starting to stress because he was taking so long to get back. Then up walks the Husband with two drinks in his hands... one is my water, and the other... sparkling wine! (Remember, it is super early in the morning... like 7:30 a.m.)
As we were boarding the plane, this really grumpy airport worker made a point to tell on him for bringing alcohol on the plane. The funny thing was that the cup was empty and there were no trash cans to throw it away. I got all defensive-wifey on the airport worker [aka Wine Police] and told the flight attendants who just rolled their eyes, laughed, and told us that it was fine and to take our seats.
We sat down and were about to take off when I thought I heard the flight attendant say something about "Dallas." I looked at the Husband and said, "Did he just say Dallas?" But he hadn't heard what the flight attendent said.
Fast-forward to landing...
As the flight was preparing to land, the same flight attendant came on the intercom and said, "We will be arriving in Dallas in [blah, blah, blah] minutes..." The Husband and I looked at each other all freaked out because we were supposed to be in Washington, D.C., not Texas. The guy kept saying what sounded like "Dallas" and I thought that there was no way that the airline would have let us on the wrong flight... NO WAY!
I turned to the guy next to me and said, "This is going to sound funny, but this flight is landing in Washington, right?" He said, "Yes, Dulles." OMG! It sounded like he was saying "Dallas" the whole time, but he was actually saying Dulles... as in Washington Dulles International Airport.
My story ends here today, but I will be back soon with part two of our secret mission road trip adventure.
